This paper presents an evaluation of a farm-business assessment model that uses financial performance measures and tracks ‘wealth change’ to evaluate performance trends over time, and ranks the relative business performance of commercial participants. Its core component involves the use of comparative analysis, which is structured as an introductory rapid-assessment model, together with a ranking system that has been designed to differentiate the relative performance levels of farm businesses. The system has been labelled as the Business Performance Index (BPI) model to reflect its performance-ranking role that explores the relationships, if any, between farmer attitudes and business performance. The BPI model is discussed within the context of the debate... |

In this paper the results of a situation analysis of the Australian venison industry are presented from a study commissioned as part of the development process of an endorsed strategic plan for the Australian farmed venison industry. An extensive literature review, combined with in depth interviews with industry participants, revealed that the Australian venison industry is currently in an extended slump, characterised by a lack of viability within the industry. This lack of viability is due to many factors including, a decline in the number of large scale producers, reduced slaughter and production levels, historically low farm gate returns and very low demand for venison in the domestic market. A significant decline in export demand for venison has also... |

The process of developing and successfully achieving endorsement of a strategic plan formulated for the Australian Venison Industry is presented in this paper, the first in a series of four papers on this theme. The endorsed strategic plan recommends that the industry should establish market focussed alliances with the aim of delivering a specified product to an identified target market. It also proposes generic industry policies and initiatives and suggests a stronger commercial focus for the RIRDC research model. The development process of the strategic plan relied on the integration of both analytical and relationship methodologies. This paper will detail the rationale underpinning this integrated approach together with its application to developing a... |

China has experienced rapid economic growth over the last 26 years. As per capita income has increased, household consumption has become greatly diversified, and many food new products have entered the market. Beef is slowly gaining ground relative to the more traditional pork products. This research examined factors affecting beef purchasing decisions in China. The effect of socioeconomic and demographic characteristics, together with other influences on preferences, was analysed using probit regression analysis. Compared with other meats, the relatively high price of beef (34%) and consumers’ unfamiliarity with its cooking method (26%) are the main limitations for beef consumption. These are followed by ‘don’t like the taste and smell’ which shows that... |

The livestock industry in China has undergone massive changes since the liberalisation of markets started in 1985. The beef sector is no exception to this transition with production and consumption increasing faster than all other meats in the last two decades. The number of cattle has nearly doubled since 1980 to be around 141.6 million in 2005 and beef production has increased at a much faster rate than the cattle inventory. As the third largest beef producing country in the world, China exports and imports beef cattle. The emerging Chinese market has generally been seen as an opportunity for the Australian red meat industry. However, given the rate of increase in output, China may also provide a threat. With this in mind, understanding the current beef... |

This paper summarises the outcomes of a National Workshop in Farm Management, 5-6 December 2002, organised by the University of Sydney, Faculty of Rural Management, Orange. At this Workshop leading farmers, industry leaders, corporate representatives, academics, researchers and extension officers explored the future of farm management (education, research and consultancy) in Australia. Major outcomes were that farm management practice is proceeding informally to undertake decisions supporting socially and ecologically friendly, sustainable commercial production agriculture. However the risks of lack of integration, a reductionist approach to only on-farm practice, stagnation of academic programs to respond to leading edge industry initiatives, as well as... |

Anecdotal evidence, confirmed by an analysis of six years wool sales data, indicates that selection to reduce fibre diameter and maintain, or increase, fleece weight, has led to an increase in the quantity and staple strength of fleeces produced. Long staples attract a price penalty. However, a comparison of 9- vs. 12-monthly shearing indicated that reducing the shearing interval to 9 months did not lead to any significant improvement in gross margins. An analysis of the effects of age and growth period on the repeatability of staple length indicated that sheep with the potential for long staple lengths could be allocated to appropriate management groups at 9 or 12 months-of-age. |

This research focuses on an Australian agribusiness supply chain, the Australian Beef Supply Chain. The definition of the Australian Beef Supply Chain is the chain or sequence of all activities from the breeding property to the domestic or overseas consumers. The beef sector in Australia is undergoing rapid change because of globalisation, a highly competitive beef market (local and export), quicker production cycle and delivery times and consequently reduced inventories, a general speed-up of the rate of change in the business environment, the trend toward more outsourcing of activities, and the rapid development of IT. In this business environment, advanced supply chain systems have the potential to provide significant contributions to Australian beef... |
